*Tips for 2012* #3 The Staves

The Staves live are just incredible. They have a few cracking tunes and their heavenly harmonies are so refined and seemingly effortless. The kind of thing you'd only get from growing up singing together from when first they could hold a note. I first came across them last year and was left with a lasting impression. I also witnessed a great performance from them at Bushstock.

They got their first play on BBC Radio1 by Fearne Cotton this week and their ep 'Mexico' is out on December 11th. You can get a free download of a couple of live tracks from their website.

2012 looks set to be an interesting year for the Staveley-Taylor sisters. They just finished their first UK headline tour with the last show in Brighton, which I had the privilege of attending. They will follow this up by touring the USA with Civil Wars, before returning to tour with Michael Kiwanuka.

Here is the video to the single 'Mexico' from the ep.

I for one look forward to seeing them again soon!

*Tips for 2012* #2 Gross Magic

So, after dabbling in a few genres young Sam Mcgarrigle from Brighton has found a style of making music that is on a par with any pop chart regulars in terms of catchiness, but with a refreshing lo-fi sound. Sam seems to have the gift of not only knowing what to take from what has influenced him, but he seems to have been able to piece them together in such a way as to create something really special with his debut release 'Teen Jamz' Ep.
The EP sent the blog world alight with excitement and intrigue earlier this year.

I've read somewhere that the initial creative 'spark' for his sound was a chance finding of an ELO greatest hits cassette in a charity shop. I gather that was his initial inspiration and he then brought his take along with all of his other influences.

I really look forward to hearing what he comes up with next.
He has recently been touring the UK and Europe with Yuck and Metronomy.

Keep an eye on his website and facebook for upcoming shows in 2012. I hear that he'll be over in America for SXSW and you can catch them for free at these UK Vice magazine launches with FANZINE.

*Tips for 2012* #1 Lianne La Havas

Lianne La Havas first caught my eye/ear way back in April supporting the charismatic Marques Toliver. Review here.
She has since gone on to appear on Jools Holland, where she made quite an impression on Bon Iver who decided to take her on tour in the US and Canada.

Lianne has a very soulful smoky voice and a delightful rhythmic way with her electric guitar, which I believe is named 'Connie'. Her first UK tour sold out and even had venues upgraded to accomodate the demand for tickets. She has four dates at The Social in London throughout January leading into February which have all sold out already, but you still have a chance to catch her at The Borderline, London where she'll be playing as part of HMV's Next Big Thing.

Her debut ep 'Lost & Found' was released in November and an album looks set to follow early in 2012.
You can also get a free live ep on her website! www.liannelahavas.com

I will however mention that here follow-up ep to 'His Young Heart' is out and is entitled 'The Wild Youth'. Both ep's can be purchased here

New material from Nathaniel Rateliff

Nathaniel Rateliff offered a taster of what's to come from him next year, playing three tracks from his next album 'Falling Faster Than You Can Run' on OpenAir Public Radio, Colorado. He plays “Three Fingers In”, “Right On" and “When Do You See” as well as talking about touring Europe with Mumford and Sons, what’s on his rider and his biggest rock star moment this year.

Michael Kiwanuka on Jools Holland

Took my time to blog about this, but I've been a bit slack of late...

Here is 'I'm Getting Ready' taken from Michael's performance on Jools Holland last week. So happy to see him music reaching so many others now. Read a review I wrote including an interview from back in May here

If you're lucky enough to have tickets to his Show in Brighton tomorrow night at The Hope again where I first saw him, do enjoy! You lucky b*&?#%ds

Introducing: Ez Stone

Ez Stone is a singer/songwriter from Brighton. Since starting gigging he has grown a reputation for his mesmerising guitar playing, which blended with his story-telling folk songs make for a captivating performance.

You may have seen him giging in Brighton in other projects, but he has decided that the time has come to start out on his own.

He was due to support Kyla La Grange for Communion in Brighton, but she fell ill. The show went ahead with Ez playing a very impressive set accompanied by his female violin wielding backing vocalist. He has shows Throughout December including dates in London and Northampton, where he'll be on the bill with Emily and the Woods.

Have a look at these gems from his YouTube channel.

Introducing: Jamie N Commons

I love finding artist at gigs instead of via press release :)

I saw Jamie N Commons supporting Marques Toliver a few weeks ago and was astounded by the sound that came from the 22-year-old and his incredibly proficient band.

I saw him again last night, this time supporting another long time favourite of mine Michael Kiwanuka. He again blew me away. I had the chance to speak with him briefly and found that he had studied and trained as an opera singer at Goldsmiths University.

His bluesy inspired, Nick Cave-esque songs fall right in line with my current taste in listening material.

He is simply someone you need to see live!

Jamie N Commons by Jamie N Commons

His debut ep 'The Baron' is due for release on October 17th by Luv Luv Luv Records with a free show at The Old Queens Head, London.

He has had some great support slots with the aforementioned Marques Toliver, Michael Kiwanuka and Dry The River. He'll also be appearing in support or Spector at the following shows throughout October:

18th- Roadhouse, Manchester - £4
19th- Start The Bus, Bristol - Free Entry
20th- Shacklewell Arms, London - £5

SBTRKT - Wildfire feat. Little Dragon

Just got hold of the latest single from SBTRKT, featuring an awesome vocal turn from the amazing Yukimi Nagano of Little Dragon. The single is from their forthcoming self-titled LP, out June 28 on Young Turks

This track shows off the bassy-electronica that the LP is leaning towards, slightly different from the remixes we have been used to from him. Although he doesn't sing himself, the guest vocals on the track are great! The track has quite a groove to it but is really quite chilled and I found this best to listen to when just riding around London on my bike on a hot day.

Quite a comparison in terms of the feel of this new material to James Blake and Jamie Woon.

Tom Williams And The Boat

Anyone who has seen these guys play live I'm sure will love with them as much as me. I heard Tom on Tom Robinson's Fresh On The Net show on 6music the other night and he sounds like a really nice chap. He sounds like he knows what he's doing and seems to have built a really great rapport with his growing fanbase.

I first came across Tom Williams back in 2008 when they played BBC Introducing at Radio 1's Big Weekend. Since then the band has come of age and have really honed and perfected their sound. They are now armed with some craking songs, 'Concentrate' is a great song!

Their first album was self released in February 2011, where intitial stocks of 12" heavyweight vinyl sold out!
He's fighting the good fight and doing this all without any label backing so please do check him out if you haven't and if you like it, do make a purchase.

Here's a link to a deluxe vinyl bundle for only £25!
I just ordered mine!
http://tomwilliamsandtheboat.spinshop.com/

The future looks good for Tom having been a regular on the festival circuit for the past couple of years and I'm looking forward to what comes from them next and perhaps catching them on tour at some point.

Glastonbury Festival Day One: 24/06/11

Started my day off with Alex of Twin Brother doing an interview on Worthy FM at 9am, before heading to the BBC Introducing Stage for a full band Twin Brother set. A great turnout which seemed to receive the songs well. I heard many talk of being particularly impressed by the vocal.

Next for me was BB King on the iconic Pyramid Stage. Truly moving stuff from the great soul/blues artist. Not anything new but so much passion in this guy's performance backing by the tightest band ever!

Bright Eyes took the Other Stage by storm during a downpour. He performed in a cloak looking rather like a Jedi. He began by tossing vinyl from the stage before getting stuck into a great set laden with his classic works.

Radiohead were my highlight of the day. An epic crowd formed from about 7pm as a guest slot was widely anticipated at 8. Radiohead delivered a strong set of their newer material which didn't seem to disappoint. An unexpected encore brought the enormous crowd to voice, singing along to the crowd pleasing Street Spirit (Fade Out).

I caught the end of a lively performance from Mumford and Sons, but I'll save this one for Thursday when I see them with Arcade Fire and Beirut.

DJ Shadow finished the night for me with a lively set with great visuals as usual.

Review: Bushstock Festival, Shepherds Bush, London 05/06/11

Communion have done themselves proud with this one-day event. The quality of the line-ups throughout the day made it impossible for some to decide who to see. At four great venues as well. The weather was great, a free beer on entry and the community feel to the day that Communion have done so well to not only achieve, but maintain so strongly.

First up was the haunting sound of Daughter in the beautiful and full St. Stephens Church. The simple, yet effective set-up of Elena Tonra and guitarist Igor Haefeli again creating a prefect ambient sound for Elena to deliver her strong vocal. The songs carried through the church beautifully and I don't think anyone wanted the set to end. You may recognise her song 'Landfill' from radio play and sessions on BBC6 Music, if not I strongly suggest you check it out! It is on her self released ep 'His Young Heart', which can be downloaded or purchased at gigs. She has recently signed to the Communion Records so watch out for her in the future. She is gigging around London

Next up, another artist I have recently posted about, Michael Kiwanuka. What more can I say about his charming personality that woos the audience from start to finish. The soulful, up-lifting rhythm of his songs and his quaint, pure vocal felt right at home in St. Stephens and it felt like one of those church scenes in the movies when he has everyone in the aisles clapping along to his final number. Michael's Debut ep is out on Communion Records as of June 13th, but you can get it on itunes now. The title track 'Tell Me A Tale' was a particular highlight.

Over at Shepherds Bar Tom Williams And The Boat gave an assured performance in front of a fairly modest crowd, that grew as the set went on. They got everyone going though with their rock-tinged folk. The six-piece have put together something quite special and the violin parts stand out as excellent to me. This is showcased best in the track 'Concentrate', my favourite of the bunch with a fantastic chorus and very cleverly written lyrics that make this one stand out for me.

Back at St. Stephens and The Staves harmonies in the church were simply breathtaking. Like the UK's answer to Mountain Man, only better in my opinion. Some very well written songs that you just get lost in. One of the few acts that when I actually like to close my eyes through a couple of the songs to really appreciate their beauty.

Marques Toliver was my stand-out performance of the day. The charismatic American decided after two of songs on stage that he would unplug his violin and come and play to us in the middle of the church. He belted out the first track for his recently released ep called 'Butterflies Are Not Free'. The track called 'Charter Magic' was received amazingly as the bustling hub of the festival was silenced. Many had beaming smiles on their faces. After a couple more in that fashion he returned to the stage to share with us that it felt how a concert would be back in "olden times", but it was better because "Then, you would all be wearing wigs and I'd be a slave". He then played 'Step Back And Remember' on his auto harp using a kick drum. After the intro he told us that the beauty of the auto harp was that you could sing anything over it and proceeded to give us a rendition of 'Scrub' by T.L.C. before getting with the heavenly song.

I caught a few songs from Kill It Kid at Ginglik. Their new heavier rock sound that they have found since dropping the violin from their songs, sounded amazing in the intimate underground venue. Their most recent single 'Pray On Me' sounded amazing. It's currently 'Single Of The Week' on Kerrang Radio. Things are looking good for this four-piece from Bath having recently been out to America for SXSW. Very much looking forward to what these guys produce next.

Lucy Rose played a set with her full band at Shepherds Bar to a capacity crowd. I could easily imagine Lucy playing these songs alone as the songwriting and guitar were of a very high standard, but what was brought to the songs by the band which included cello and violin was a whole different dimension. The strings were very strong and complimented the songs very nicely. There were at times a real caribbean feeling groove, which I loved!

Seeing Treetop Flyers for the first time since the Glastonbury Emerging Talent final was very nice indeed. Their rocky take on the folk revival that has been going a while now is really good. Reid delivers a great sounding vocal and the songs are all 'hits' in my opinion. Each one hooks you in. A very strong set and ones to watch out for at Glastonbury. I hear they are playing a lot there!

Fink finished the night off perfectly for me with a set of comforting ambient sounds; the very meaning of easy listening, Although very musically intense and interesting at the same time. Appearance-wise, you wouldn't at first expect such a smooth and soulful voice. I was surprised by how much sound the three men created on stage and the church acoustics only made it sound bigger.

I topped the night off at the after party with a lot of the lovely artists and people that I'd met over the course of the day. It was a wonderful finish to an event where each venue was so well programmed. Everything just seemed to fit in perfectly with where it was. The sense of musical community was ever present and the level of talent on show never dropped. Lets hope we see this again next year!

Introducing - Michael Kiwanuka

I saw Michael Kiwanuka on the line-up for Communion's Bushstock Festival and decided I'd check him out. I saw that he was playing at The Hope in Brighton and that's where I was. I enjoyed what I heard so I went along. Nathaniel Rateliff was playing also, so that made the decision to go easier!
Michael's set was just what I needed to hear that day. Such a soulful voice which came seemingly effortlessly. This was accompanied by a lovely style on the guitar, which had a very nice undercurrent of folk and some subtle bass notes from his good friend and bassist.
It was easy for the audience (who where captivated) to see how much Michael was enjoying performing for us. The mood during the set was perfect, each song was silently enjoyed and then the end was met with rapturous applause.
Michael ended his set with his version of 'I Don't Know' by Bill Withers. The song originally appeared on the Still Bill album, released in1972. Although not a recognised 'hit', this is a great song and with Michael's modern day twist it was brought to life!
Still in his early 20's, Michael has a voice and a hat full of songs which show a real maturity beyond his years. With his EP launch on June 7th in London at The Social looking like being a great show, I would certainly try to get along. Keep an eye out for this young man!

The EP is entitled 'Tell Me A Tall' and is available to download via itunes now here

I caught up with Michael later for a quick interview and he was such a pleasure to speak to, we were so caught up talking that he nearly missed his train home!

For anyone reading who hasn't heard of you, could you explain who you are and what you do?
"My name is Michael Kiwanuka and I'm a singer/songwriter from North London"

Can you give us a brief history of how you came to write such wonderful songs?
"I started writing after hearing songs that moved me when i listened to them. I thought it would be nice to make music that might move myself and also others"

Having seen you last night, it's clear that you really enjoy performing. Are there any shows that stand out for you as being really good or really bad?
"I did a show in Dublin at the Olympia Theatre supporting Adele and the audience where so welcoming and fun. The venue is gorgeous too!"

What were your biggest influences, musical or otherwise?
"My biggest influences are soul singers like Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding and songwriters like Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell. Bill Withers for me encapsulated all of the above."

You have your debut release 'Tell Me A Tale' out on Communion Records in June. You must be excited?
"I'm very excited about my debut release! I think it's any musicians dream to release music"

How did you get involved with Communion and what do you think of what they're doing in the music industry with their nights, label and Bushstock festival?
"I got involved with Communion when they heard the EP. I needed someone to put it out and they agreed to do it. I love what they do and the spirit they do it with. A lovely community of producers, musicians, songwriters and artists. I can only see them going from strength to strength. A unique collective of people"

I see that  you toured with Adele, how was that?
"Touring with Adele was an amazing experience. I enjoyed every minute of it and learned loads. A great opportunity and I'm grateful for it"

Finally, what are your fondest musical memories? In your house? In your neighborhood or town?
"I have quite a few fond musical memories but i think nothing beats playing music with friends that share the same passion."

Many thanks Michael, I look forward to seeing you at Bushstock. All the best with the EP launch, we will be making a purchase!

Here is footage I found of the Bill Withers cover I mentioned, but in Paris.

Miles Kane - Concrete for Q

Just got home from seeing Miles Kane play at Concrete for Q. The gig was recorded for their radio show and will be broadcast soon.
The performance was even better than I expected. Full of energy and a reminder of how good Brit-Indie-Pop-Rock can be. A throw back to the 90's, but in the best of ways. It felt like a set from Oasis in their hayday with Kane's modern twist on it. Fantastic guitar riffs and loud echoey vocals carried the songs up and out of the tiny venue. The intimate crowd really enjoyed the show and joined in on several catchy chorus's.

I will be seeing Miles Kane again and his album 'Colour Of The Trap' will be getting another spin tomorrow.

Speciail thanks to Peter from Sourmash for taking me along to the show.

Daughter at Strongroom

I came across the soothing music of Daughter when listening to Huw Stephens on Radio 1 last Wednesday. I was delighted to hear that she would be playing The Great Escape Festival, and further still when I found out she was playing the same night as Twin Brother at Latest Music Bar!

Daughter as an act materialised in November last year when Elena Tonra cut off all of her hair and decided to put up four new songs under this name on a new page. She grew up on a music diet of her parents vinyl collection and her older brothers rock CD's. It would seem that having discovered acoustic music she started to piece together her early songs.

Last night I went to a stipped back set at Strongroom where Elena treated us to a thirty minute with her guitarist Igor Haefeli. The performance the pair gave was compelling. Deep lyrics delivered very modestly, Elena lets her voice take the forefront and builds around it with delicately composed instrumentation. The second song on the EP called 'The Woods' is a perfect example of this.

Having spoken with Elena after the show it is clear that when performing she becomes the songs and very much embodies the feeling behind them for the time that she is playing them. I purchased her four track self released EP which is called 'His Young Heart'. This is available to download but if like myself you prefer a physical copy, there are a limited amount that are being sold at shows.

The Great Escape Wednesday Night - Rizzle Kicks

The Great Esacape Festival kicked off on the Wednesday night with a pre-escape party. I caught The Mirrors set, which looked and felt very 80's. I really enjoyed it at first but found myself getting a bit lost during the set. Their single 'Into The Heart' was a particular highlight and you can download it now

On before them were Brighton lads Rizzle Kicks who I hear "absolutely smashed it!" with a new band setup. Shame I only got there for the end. They played again the next day at the wristband exchange (Jubilee Square), which thankfully I made it out to and thoroughly enjoyed! A very energetic performance from two very nice lads! I wonder if this had anything to do with the relentless energy drink that was beng handed around, as they were on the Relentless stage.
The boys left Brighton to embark on a long journey north to Carlisle to perform on the Introducing Stage at BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend. From watching the videos I can only assume that they have re-named the place Carlizzle! Trust me you will all be getting down with the trumpets soon, but until then enjoy this footage of them at the festival where they were gifted a nice pink bra on stage!

The Abbey Tavern - Open Mic

I Went to an open Mic night at The Abbey Tavern in Kentish Town last night.
It was the usual some good, some bad, up until a few standout performances by some very talented artists indeed! Bella Spinks, Lucy Rose, Kerry Leatham from Peter & Kerry and Ryan Keen all stood out.

What particularly stood out for me was Ryan's style of guitar playing and I was drawn in by the song 'Thank You'. He told us that it was written for his Grandma. She passed away and left him some money that he used to buy his guitar which allows him to make the most of his percussive style of play. See the video below.

You can buy Ryan's first EP entitled 'Aiming For The Sun'. He's currently working on a second EP. You can see him live on May 9th at 93 Feet East and I was delighted to hear that he'll be playing at the same festival as Twin Brother this year at REDFEST.

Lucy Rose also has her first single coming out and the launch night is on July 5th at Cargo. Here's the facebook event and you can buy tickets here.

What made everybody's night was the man on last with the cello which had two speakers in the back! We found out once he'd started that this played a backing track, to which he plucked away at his cello like a double bass. Unfortunately the man was not a singer, but played his costomized nstrument very competently. I think he was the most amusing of the evening!

Boss Angeles - Beach Slalom DOWNLOAD

Absolutely loving this track! Heard it on 6music BBC Introducing with Tom Robinson via Ollie Russian's blog tip.

They are from Boscombe, which is where they get their name. Apparently Boss Angeles is what the locals call it there. I've found out little about the band, but I'll be keeping an eye out for more tunes like this and so should you.

Here's the track and if you like it, you can download it for free!

Record Store Day is upon us!

So it's that time again. Get up early, get to your favourite record store and get hold of some fantastic releases! The are LOADS of special releases to celebrate the day that you can get your hands on.

I will be heading down to my favourite, which is back home in Brighton. Resident, which last week was voted 'England's favourite independant record store!

A few of the highlights from the 250+ exclusive RSD releases for us include Radiohead, Sonic Youth, Nirvana, The Beach Boys, Bat For Lashes / Beck, Grinderman, Josh T Pearson, The Clash, Flaming Lips, Fleet Foxes, Foo Fighters, Flying Lotus, Charlotte Gainsbourg & Villagers, Metronomy, Moon Duo, Natural Snow Buildings, Queen, The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen & Suede. There are loads more releases this year but they are being pressed in very limited quantities.

Find out all about Record Store Day and special releases etc here http://www.recordstoreday.com/Home

“I just really love anything that’s not faceless and where people know each other and work together to build, like, a community. People that work there know their stuff; they’re not coming in today to sell music and tomorrow to sell TVs and the next day to sell whatever. Somebody can come in and say, “I want somebody who plays piano music” or something, and somebody will actually tell them to listen to my record and they’ll play it in the store for them and they’ll talk about it. You can connect in some way with somebody who’s doing something that they love. And that it’s important to have something that is being done just out of true love for new music that is being welcomed into the world. People should go to their indie record store and find out what is happening.”

Bon Iver announces second album

Bon Iver has announced that the follow up to 2007 album 'For Emma, Forever Ago' is on its way. The new album is as yet unnamed and will feature ten new songs, due to be released some time in June.

Topping the first album which is one of my favourite albums ever, will not be easy at all!

Justin Vernon told Rolling Stone back in March that “Somewhere along the line, I forgot how to write songs,” and that “I couldn’t do it anymore with a guitar. It wasn’t happening.” He's worked with a few people on this album including Colin Stetson, who plays with Arcade Fire and Tom Waits. He says “I built the record myself, but I allowed those people to come in and change the scene.”

Communion are to release a compilation album entitled “Communion Presents The Flowerpot Sessions”. This consist of 3 CDs and a DVD documentary from the week-long project which took place in the summer of 2010. They got a collection of fantistic artists together to collaborate and perform at The Flowerpot in Kentish Town, London.

This will be available from May 23rd and I highly recommend it!
It features co-founders of Communion Kevin Jones and Ben Lovett (also of Mumford & Sons), as well as artists such as Damien Rice, Kyla la Grange, Marcus Foster, Matthew & the Atlas, Pete Roe, Lissie, Angus & Julia Stone, and many more...

'Don't Sit Down 'Cause I've Moved Your Chair' - New Arctic Monkeys single

So the first offering from the eagerly awaited Arctic Monkeys album (Suck It And See - out June 6th Pre-order) is here and I for one am loving it. It's darker, heavier and I love the lyrics. A very mature track from them and really looking forward to hearing it live as I can just imagine it!

A very unusual title which they have revealed came about in the studio as a result of a prank which wasn't followed through (use your imagination here).

The single is available now digitally and on April 16th (record store day) you'll be able to get a limited white-label 7", with formal release scheduled for May 30th.

There are 2 tracks on the full digital and formal releases which you won't find on the album called 'I.D.S.T.' and 'The Blond-O-Sonic Shimmer Trap'.

If you're going to Benicassim you can see them there or at their two dates in Sheffield on June 10th and 11th.

St Giles-in-the-fields Marques Toliver & Lianne La Havas

As expected Marques Toliver was sensational live, a real talent! Be sure to buy his EP 'Butterflies Are Not Free' which comes out on April 25th on Bella Union. The fun Marques seems to be having on stage really comes across nicely and the strings are arranged beautifully. Will make certain that I catch up with him at The Great Escape Festival and maybe even get a chat with him ;)

Video was done by the fantastic think-work-play

Hadn't even checked out the support for this so it was a pleasant surprise to be treated to a set by Lianne La Havas (One of Marques' backing vocalists). Although diminutive in stature, she generates a big sound! there is a nice soulful mild huskyness to her voice, but this is very subtle. Starting her set seemingly feeling quite nervous with a beautiful love song she soon let out some attitude with the second song which she described as a hate song. Third song was a very nicely re-worked cover of Everything Everything's Final Form.

My favourite song of the set provoked a few laughs from most of the packed out crowd, was called Age and was about a predicament she currently finds herself in.

Monument Valley opened the show with a short and sweet set. Some very nice folky guitar sounds and some really nice lyrics. Reminded me vocally of Nizlopi.
See him in Brighton May 12th at The Prince Albert.

Looking forward to tomorrow night

Had to make a difficult choice about where to go tomorrow night, but I decided that there wasn't really any competition for Marques Toliver's EP launch at St Giles-In-The-Fields Church. Tickets are a bargain at £7.50.
As mentioned in a previous post, he is signed to what is quite possibly my favourite UK Indie Label Bella Union.

Heard such great things about him, so tomorrow night I'm hoping to come home with some real inspiration for a live review.

Here he is on Jools Holland:

On another note, Huw Stephens' show on Radio1 is really good tonight! Heard Peregrine by Story Books. Wonderful song! Discovered by Jacob Rickard on BBC Introducing in Kent. Will be playing that again.

Glastonbury Emerging Talent Final

Had an absolutely amazing night in Pilton last night. Thank you to everyone who put Twin Brother through to the final of the competition, including a special thank you to Peter from This Music Wins! It was decided on the night that all 8 finalists were impressive enough to be offered slots at the Glastonbury festival in June.

For photos of all the other performers on the night.

The winner were Treetop Flyers who have a release coming out with Communion on May 23rd. They put on a really good performance showing off a slightly rockier side to the new folk wave, which saw its peak in the middle of last year. Their songs hang oh huge chorus' not unlike the leaders of the folk movement, Mumford & Sons. As well as Glastonbury they will appear at Camden Crawl, Bushstock, Hop Farm and Blissfields this summer, so no excuse to miss them.

Also a quick happy birthday to Simon Raymonde of Bella Union.

Bella Union's Marques Toliver

Upon more admiration of the work of City Sessions this evening I decided to reseach a bit more about Marques Toliver. A soulful Seth Lakeman perhaps, with vocals reminiscent of John Legend and the late (and great) Marvin Gaye. Really wish I was strolling throught the lanes back home in Brghton when this was going on.

Being signed to bella union and having his new ‘Butterflies Are Not Free’ EP released on April 25th is where he is now, but there is a wealth of history behind him. He comes from Florida where he trained as a classical violinist, turning away from the family business of grave-digging. He moved to New York and worked in a clothes store while spending a lot of time busking and attracting a lot of attention (for the right reasons). Fans of Grizzly Bear may be aware that he had a spell playing with them. He aquired the admiration of one Adele while she was in the States also.
I myself can't wait to go and purchase the EP as a late birthday present for myself, as what I have heard has made me only want to hear more. If you can get along to Rough Trade East on the 25th, he will be playing in-store, unfortunately I can't but will most certainly be seeing him during The Great Escape Festival on May 14th at The Unitarian Church, Brighton.
